Herbert M. Sherburne, 88, passed away peacefully on August 15 from natural causes. Herb was a long-time resident of Great Falls. Memorial services will be held at the O’Connor Funeral home on Saturday, August 18 at 11:00AM. Herb was born in Spokane, Washington on Jan 6th, 1930. He was raised in Browning by his parents Frank and May Sherburne. Upon graduating from Browning High School he attended the then Montana School of Mines in Butte, graduating with a degree in Mining Engineering in 1951. It was during this time in Butte that he met and married the love of his life, Phyllis (nee Dunstan). They were lovingly devoted to each other for 61 years of marriage until she preceded him in passing in 2012. After graduating from the School of Mines, Herb and Phyllis moved to Coleraine, MN where he worked for US Steel on the Mesabi Iron Range for four years.Herb and Phyllis then returned home to Montana, settling in Great Falls.There they raised their two children Phil and Sheri, and Herb became a small business owner.Herb was the proud owner and operator of the Falls Rental Service until 1970, with additional investments in real estate and surveying.Herb also became a noted expert on property and boundary disputes in Central Montana and for several years served as the President of the Montana Mining Association. In his personal time Herb was a noted fly fisherman and delighted in nothing more than sharing that joy with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.As a great story teller Herb would often entertain family and friends with histories about his days growing up in Browning, going to school in Butte, working in Minnesota, or raising a family in Great Falls.Additionally, he continued to practice and teach wood working, geology, mining and surveying. Herb was preceded in passing by his wife, Phyllis. He is survived by son Philip Sherburne of Morgan Hill, California; daughter Sheri (Sherburne) Bruington of Helena, MT; and his sister Betsy Stevens of Palm Springs, California. Herb is also survived by five grandchildren, Patrick Sherburne, Matthew Sherburne, Nathanial Bruington, Andrew Bruington and Kellie Sherburne as well as five great-grandchildren. Herb and Phyllis were both active members of the First United Methodist Church where Herb served on a number of committees over the years. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the First United Methodist Church of Great Falls.
