John Thomas Graves

August 18, 1949 — June 23, 2018

John Thomas Graves, the oldest of 4 siblings, was born to Thomas and Helen Graves in Pipestone Minnesota, near their family corn farm in Jasper South Dakota. They later moved to Long Beach California where he graduated from Downey High School. Afterwards, he enlisted briefly in the United States Marine Corps and served proudly until medically retired. He then decided to attend college at the University of Montana, where he studied business management and made some lifelong friends during his colorful escapades. Afterwards, working as the produce manager at Market Basket, he met and married the love of his life. They decided that there was no better place to live and raise their two adopted children than in Montana. He traded his experience as a produce manager to develop Handcrafted Wood Products, a family business which grew into his true livelihood. His passion for woodworking and carpentry was evident in his fine craftsmanship. He also took pride in performing rapid mental calculations with amazing speed and accuracy, especially if it meant making or saving a few dollars. He always delighted in playing cards where he could leverage his statistical prowess. He was a protector, provider, and mentor.Despite his bear-like stature and demeanor when riled, he always gave unselfishly of himself to those he loved and cared about. A father figure to many, whether it was lending a hand, preparing and hosting big meals for family and friends, or imparting his life wisdom, he embraced his duties as a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather in his own unique way. He has left an indelible impression on all who met him, and will be greatly missed by those who know and love him. It was his wishes to be cremated and have a private memorial in lieu of a funeral service. John is survived by his wife of 46 years Diana Graves; son Curt (Melissa) Graves, daughter Jennifer Graves, and honorary daughter Brandy Brewer. He also leaves behind his four grandchildren Shanya, Jared, Harli, Max, and honorary granddaughters Addison and Lillian. His surviving sisters include Michelle Cornwell and Julie (Jack) Blalock, and sister-in-law Jackie Graves; surviving nieces Traci (Matt) Esseltine and sons, Carrie (Tim) Geisbauer and sons, Tiffany Graves, Tabatha (Steven) Goodwin and daughters, and nephew Brennan Cornwell. He was preceded in death by both parents Thomas and Helen Graves and his brother Timothy Graves.
