Obituary for Sharon Lynn Maher

Sharon Lynn Maher passed away on January 2, 2019. A gathering of family and friends is scheduled for Monday, January 7th at 2:00 PM at Schnider Funeral Home, 1510 13th St S, Great Falls, MT. O’Connor Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Sharon was born January 12, 1949, to parents Roger “Bud” F. Morrison and Frances “Boots” Morrison. She lived a full and adventurous life, traveling to Alaska, Ireland, Hawaii, Vancouver, Key West, and many more beautiful places. She had a special place in her heart for Glacier National Park in Montana, but always said Yellowstone National Park was her favorite. She rode the iconic red buses in Glacier for the first time when she was eight years old. She made a point to ride the Going to the Sun Highway each year on the first weekend it opened after the snowfall was cleared.

Sharon had a special ability to master every new thing she tried. She was an avid and formidable bridge player and bright addition to the local bridge club in Great Falls, the Big Sky Bridge Club. She achieved the recognition of Bronze Life Master after playing for only a few years. Her other accomplishments include becoming a master gardener. One visit to her beautiful yard and you would easily see why. She loved to quilt with her daughter and granddaughters. She was also a great baseball lover and was a Cubs fan “before it was cool.”

She was known for being both extremely predictable and unpredictable. After telling her children for years that she would never ride a motorcycle, or allow them to, she and George bought a Honda Goldwing purple trike. One of her favorite past times became riding the trike all over the state. She even donned a pair of leather chaps for the colder rides.

You could always expect dinner to be served promptly at 5:30 and that she would be up by 8:00 a.m. every morning enjoying her Diet Coke and watching the river go by.

Her family was blessed to spend her last few days by her side, sharing memories and saying goodbye. A truly special gift was that her best friend of over 50 years, Donalyn Martin, and her husband Denny, were able to travel from South Bend, Indiana to spend her last days together.

Sharon is survived by her husband, George Maher; her father; brother Roger Morrison and his wife Julie and their children Nicole, Anna, and Sarah; sister Jody Ekstrom and her husband Mark, and their three children, Matthew, John, and Megan; two children, Jacki Frank and her husband Chris and their two children Corey and Emma; and her son Scott Maher and his wife Amanda. Sharon was preceded in death by her mother and her brother, Todd Morrison.

In lieu of flowers, Sharon requested that memorials be directed to the Great Falls School Foundation at PO Box 2429, Great Falls, MT 59403 to support lunch for children. Memorials are to be restricted to the School Lunch Program, because in Sharon’s words, “no child should ever go hungry.”

Any condolences are welcome to be sent to the family in care of O’Connor Funeral Home, 2425 8th Avenue North, Great Falls, MT 59401.
